Intec Telecom Systems wins 5 million contract for InterconnecT from Telkom

UK-based Intec Telecom Systems, a fast-growing telecoms software specialist, was part of a consortium that won a £5million contract from Telkom South Africa to provide an interconnect billing solution. The deal will see Intec Telecom Systems supply software to calculate the interconnect payments Telkom should make and receive for calls connecting to other national and international carriers.

The contract is based on Intec Telecom Systems’ market-leading InterconnecT product. Intec Telecom Systems will provide InterconnecT to Telkom South Africa, to manage both its domestic and international inter-carrier settlements business. Software licences account for £2 million of the deal, with about £1m going to both Hewlett-Packard for server hardware and to BSW for supplying call analysis software. The balance of £1m is for services to integrate the system in a joint venture between Intec Telecom Systems and Telkom staff.

Interconnect billing and settlement systems are used by carriers to invoice and verify charges between themselves for carrying each other’s calls. InterconnecT charges can be up to 90% of a carrier’s income, representing billions of dollars. Deregulation of world telecommunications, and growth in the number of carriers means the market is now very competitive. Increasingly complex billing agreements between carriers have resulted in high demand for inter-carrier billing solutions able to cope with sophisticated cost calculations (known as ‘rating’) against high call volumes. InterconnecT has a very fast and powerful rating engine that has made it the leading solution in this fast-expanding market.
