Hong Kong, January 30, 2008
– Asia’s longest-running and most prestigious telecom industry awards are once more underway with the launch of the annual Telecom Asia Awards.
The Awards, now in their 11th year, are aimed at recognizing outstanding performance by the region’s telecom service providers and industry executives.
Online nominations are open now at www.telecomasia.net. Each person who makes a nomination will be eligible for a lucky draw to win one of two BlackBerry Curve devices.
Winners will be chosen from more than 100 fixed, mobile, convergence and virtual telecom operators from around the region, Telecom Asia Group Editor Joseph Waring announced today.
Mr Waring said this year’s categories included two new Awards: Best New Mobile Application and Best New Enterprise Service or Application.
The awards are chosen from a shortlist of candidates nominated by Telecom Asia readers and editors. Final selection is made by an independent panel of industry experts, who will cast votes on the basis of financial performance, technology, market leadership and corporate governance.
Last year’s biggest winner was SK Telecom, which took out the overall prize for Best Asian Telecom Carrier as well as Best Mobile Carrier. Allen Lew, chief of SingTel Singapore, won the Best CEO, fast-growing Indian telco Bharti Airtel was Best Emerging Market Carrier and Web 2.0 was voted Best New Technology.
This year’s judging team will be supported by analysts from the global IT telecom and software research firm Ovum.
“The competitiveness and diversity of the telecommunications industry in Asia reached new levels during 2007,” said David Kennedy, Research Director at Ovum. “The surge in broadband, the development of the content industry, and the growing role of China and India have all contributed to this. The field that the panel must examine grows stronger every year”.
“The Awards program is intended to reward achievement and highlight industry leadership in Asian telecommunications. We are proud to host them once more this year,” Mr Waring said.
“The new categories of mobile and enterprise apps reflect the extraordinary and exciting growth of mobile applications as well as the greater emphasis service providers now place and meeting corporate needs,” Mr Waring said.
“Intec, along with our partner sponsors, is delighted to host this gathering of leading industry experts and telecoms professionals to honor and celebrate outstanding industry achievements in 2007. We look forward to major opportunities for the telecoms industry in Asia over the rest of the decade,” said Norm Halvorson, Vice President of Intec Asia-Pacific.
The awards will be presented at a ceremony at Indigo Pearl, Phuket, Thailand, held in conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Executive Forum on Tuesday, April 8.
Readers can make their nominations in each category at the Telecom Asia website www.telecomasia.net.
